Guide - How To Repair Scuffs and Scratches on Leather - Before

The leather seat shown to the left has suffered a nasty scuff / scratch, leaving an area of damage and color loss.

Despite what is commonly thought, this is a relatively easy problem to fix. With a few simple to use products (available above!) and the steps provided below, scuffs and scratches no longer need to be a nightmare!

How to fix Scuffs and Scratches in Leather Guide - Cleaning

Step 1. Clean the Area

Make sure the area you’re treating is clean — that means no dirt, ink or other contaminants. The best method for cleaning your leather is to apply our Alcohol Cleaner to a cloth, wipe down the area thoroughly and let it dry for about 10 minutes.

How to Repair Scuffs and Scratches on Leather - Sanding

Step 2. Sand Rough Patches

If any part of the leather is rough to the touch, you need to sand those areas down. With 1200-grit sandpaper, gently sand the area until it’s smooth. You’ll get a more professional, attractive result.

How to Repair Scuffs and Scratches in Leather - Applying Filler

Step 3. Apply Filler

For areas where leather has been torn away, use a small amount of our Heavy Filler and the provided Spatula to smooth the area. After about a half hour, the section should be completely dry. Repeat this process until the surface of the leather is smooth and free of damage. Remember to leave enough time for the filler to dry completely.

Step 4. Sand Filler Level

After the filler is dried, sand the areas you filled, so they’re even with the surface of the rest of the leather. You can use the same 1200-grit sandpaper for this step.

How to fix Scuffs and Scratches on Leather - Adding Colour

Step 5. Apply Colorant

Follow the instructions provided with the colorant and tint you choose to get a perfect match to your leather. We recommend testing the color on another surface until you get the shade you need. Then, apply the matched colorant to the leather and cover the entire area. Dry the area with a hair dryer once you’re done.

Repeat this step until you’ve completely covered the damage you’re worried about. The finished product will have an intense, glossy finish — we’ll adjust that in the next step.

How to fix Scuffs and Scratches in Leather - Prepare Finish

Step 6. Prepare the Finish

This step varies based on the type of finish you’re going for. If you want a glossy finish, only use the Gloss Finish. If you want a matte finish, only use the Matte Finish. We also have a Satin Finish for a mix between the two.

Take the provided small measuring cup to mix the finish so it matches the surrounding leather. Just like with the colorant, we recommend testing the finish on another surface until you’re sure you like it.

Step 7. Apply the Finish

Dab a generous coat of finish onto the area you’re repairing. Let it dry either naturally or with a hair dryer, and then apply another coat with the same process. If you’ve followed all these steps correctly, your damaged leather will be good as new and free of any previous wear, fading and/or scratching.
