The polyurethane Leather colorants are water based and so are non-harmful and non-hazardous. The PU colorants have been designed for color restoration and color change jobs, so the pigment addition is very high allowing them to easily cover leather without the need for lots of applications.

Most importantly is their ability to resist scuffs and scratches. The PU colorants are extremely hard wearing and will not scratch unless very heavily forced.

Leather Colorant PU

This item is made to order and is considered a customised product.

Applications

The PU colorants are designed for restoring the color and changing the color of all leather items. The reason we recommend this colorant range over any other is the high rub fastness and scuff resistance characteristics: you will struggle to scuff or scratch them! The color holds and will not fade, flake or peel, even after years of use. Not only are the colorants very hard wearing, but they also feel very soft and delicate (they will not dry out over the years), we've added controlled amounts of silicone into the base mixture to give it a lovely smooth and soft texture.

Leather Colorant PU
  • Easy to use: can be applied by sponge, paintbrush or spray gun

  • Easy Clean: Just use water to wash out your spraying equipment

  • Safe to use: Can be used in any environment

  • Originally developed to meet the high-performance characteristics of the automotive market.

  • Great color adhesion

Related Products

Before applying a colorant to a leather surface there may be necessary procedures and products to use to achieve a perfect and natural finish, and products to be applied afterwards for a strong and hard wearing coating.

Leather Colorant PU
  • Leather Prep & Alcohol Cleaner
Clean the leather down with these two products before applying color. The cleaning process removes dirt, grease, oils, waxes and silicones that unless removed could prevent adhesion.

  • Leather Finish PU
Sprayed onto the leather after coloring, this product will further add to the leathers scuff and scratch resistance. It also greatly improves the leathers rub fastness, feel and look. This product is also used to adjust the gloss level of the finish: available in matt and gloss.

Can the Leather Colourant be used on aniline (absorbent) leather?

Yes, our Colourants can be used on any type of leather. If you are looking to solely restore the colour to aniline leather, we would recommend using our Leather Re-Colouring Balm, as this is designed for absorbent leathers. If you are looking to change the colour, then our Leather Colourant would be best.

Will this rub off onto my clothes?

No. Once the Leather Colourant has dried, it is completely colourfast. This is then sealed in with our Leather Finish which gives further colourfastness.

Can I use the Leather Colourants on greasy/ oily areas of leather?

Yes, however before applying the Colourant the leather will need to be degreased. For this we recommend using our Leather Degreaser. This will remove any excess oils from within the leather, enabling the Leather Colourant to adhere to the leather.

It is also highly recommended that you use our Adhesion Promotor when colouring over an area which was greasy.

What is the difference between the Re-Colouring Balm and the Leather Colourant?

The Leather Colourant has been developed to colour any type of leather. It is however more suited for a non-absorbent leather (pigmented or top-coat) as it recreates the original surface coatings. Whereas the Re-Colouring Balm is predominantly used on absorbent leathers as it needs to penetrate the leather to work to its full ability.

What leathers can the Leather Colourant be used on?

Our Colourants can be used on all leather types and colour, with the exception of suede and nubuck. It is also safe to use them on vinyl and faux leather, including bonded leather.

Our Leather Colourants have been designed for use on leather, so when colouring vinyl or faux leather, we recommend using our Adhesion Promotor to grant better adhesion.

Are there any other products I might need to go with this?

Yes, there are specific products to be used in order to prepare the leather, and then products to seal the colourant in.

Leather Prep: This is used to remove any manufacture's finish; this is an important step, so your new colour and/ or repair products adhere properly.

Alcohol Cleaner: This is used after the Leather Prep and is designed to remove any leftover residue from the Prep.

Leather Finish: This is used after applying the Leather Colourant. This colourless finish seals the colour in, creating a long-lasting repair.

If you are a DIY customer, we would recommend using one of our Leather Colourant Kits as these come with all the products and know-how required to do this.

Can this be used on car interiors, specifically door cards which are vinyl?

Yes, our Leather Colourants can be used on all leather types, and all articles of leather, such as: furniture, car interiors, handbags, clothing and many more.

It is also safe to use on vinyl and faux leather. Our Leather Colourants have been designed for use on leather so when colouring vinyl or faux leather, we recommend using our Adhesion Promotor to grant better adhesion.

Can this be used to change the colour of leather?

Yes, you can change any coloured leather, to any colour you wish. From light to dark and even dark to light!

If you are a DIY customer, we recommend using our Leather Colourant Kit, as this comes with everything you need in order to complete this type of renovation.

Is the Colourant ready to use how it is supplied?

Yes, the Leather Colourant does not need to be thinned before use. If you feel the Colourant is struggling to get through your spray equipment, you can add up to 10% water.

Why can't the Leather Colourant be used on suede or nubuck?

Suede and nubuck have a nap / pile (a fine fibrous surface). These fibres become coated by the Leather Colourant, making the overall feel of the leather quite rough.
